Family Art Webinar: Kandinsky's Concentric Circles

Free/Donation Art Workshop

Monday 3rd August 6.30pm -7.30pm

(please leave aside at least one hour for this workshop)

Wassily Kandinsky 1866 – 13 December 1944 was a Russian painter and art theorist and is generally credited as the pioneer of abstract art. Just like Shakespeare on literature, and Sigmund Freud on psychology, Wassily Kandinsky's impact on abstract art is tremendous. Kandinsky's artistic output in terms of volume and consistent quality is phenomenal and matched by very few artists in any generation. Kandinsky's analyses on forms and colours result from the painter's inner experience. He spent years creating abstract, sensorially rich paintings, working with form and colour, tirelessly observing his own paintings and those of other artists, noting their effects on his sense of colour.

For Kandinsky, colour meant more than just a visual component of a picture. Colour is its soul. In his books, he described his own perspective on how colours interacted with each other and with the spectator in detail and very poetically. Moreover, Kandinsky was a synaesthete, i.e. he could ‘hear colours’ and ‘see sounds.’

The influence of Wassily Kandinsky art theory and paintings during the artist's lifetime was considerable, his writings laid the groundwork for 20th-century movements like Abstract Expressionism. Later artists such as Jackson Pollock would inform their own unique vision with Kandinsky's theories. Mark Rothko and his contemporaries in the Color Field school reprised Kandinsky's emphasis on the emotional power of color, and members of the Neo-Expressionist movement in the 1980s were subject to Kandinsky's influence as well. Perhaps more than any other master of his era, Wassily Kandinsky forever changed the way both artists and the world at large would approach - and appreciate - visual art.

So, this is probably righteous that after a century, it is not one of his compositions – which he himself considered as his main achievements – but this small drawing that has become one of Kandinsky’s most popular works. Squares with Concentric Circles (Farbstudie - Quadrate und konzentrische Ringe), perhaps, Kandinsky's most recognizable work, is not actually a full-fledged picture. This drawing is a small study on how different colour combinations are perceived that the painter used in his creative process as a support material.

PS: Interestingly, by arranging circles in such manner, the painter unconsciously created a piece of art in the Serial Imagery technique (e.g. Andy Warhol’s famous Marilyn Diptych).

During this workshop we will have a short discussion about Wassily Kandinsky, colour theory + the spiritual in art, before delving in to process ourselves to create a watercolour sketch of concentric circles, within squares. The workshop is all about process, relationship of art to music, an exploration of the deepest and most authentic motives for making art, the “internal necessity” that impels us opening ourselves to the sensory nature of colour. Watercolour Painting + Meditation = Art Therapy
